After some time, Daasaratha got up and told his charioteer: "Sumantra, get ready the chariot and take Rama, Lakshmana and Sita to the forest.

Lakshmana went to his mother Sumitra to take leave of her. She embraced him, kissed his head and said:" Your devotion to your brother has made me proud of you. It is your duty to guard and serve Raama. Go with my blessing, Lakshmana. In the forest, regard Raama as your father and look upon Sita as myself; the forest will be to you as Ayodhya. Go cheerfully, my dear son, and God bless you."

Kausalya had made up for Seeta a packet of personal requirements. The shields, bows and arrows and other weapons of the two brothers together with pick axes and baskets were placed in the chariot. Pickaxes and baskets are essential in the forest.

Rama, Sita and Lakshmana were dressed simply for the forest. Sita got up the chariot cheerfully. Raama and Lakshmana then ascended the chariot. Sumantra drove it forward along the streets of Ayodhya city towards the forest. All the people of the city became very sad and came out to bid Rama, Sita and Lakshmana good-bye.
