One day, Sage Viswamitra came to Ayodhya. King Dasaratha received him with great honor and told him: "Is there anything in my power that I can do for you? If so, command and I shall obey." Viswamitra told him that he was being troubled by Rakshasas in the forest where he was doing Yagna. He requested that Rama be sent with him to protect him. He said: "He will surely defeat these Rakshasas and he will be famous. Entrust Rama to my care only for a few days." Like any father, Dasaratha at first hesitated. But he listened to the advise of his Counsellor Sage Vasishta and agreed to Viswamitra's request.
