Cultivating Divine Qualities (Gita-Ch. 16)

In Chapter 13 of Bhagavat Gita, Lord Krishna enumerated twenty values of life that one should adopt.  In the subsequent Chapter 16, the Lord gives an exhaustive list of the noble traits (Dhaivyam) that one should cultivate and the contrary list of the devilish (Aasuree) traits one should avoid. The slokas 1-4 of Ch.16 lay down these traits:

26 divine (daivee) qualities (slokams 1-3) & 
5 non-divine (Aasuree) qualities

abhhayam satwa saMshuddhiH GYnaana-yoga vyavasthithaH
daanaMn damasca yagnyashcha svaadhyaayastapa aarjavam

ahimsaa sathyamakrodhaH tyaagaH shantirapai shunam
dayaa bhootheshvaloluptvam Maardavam hrIracaapalam

thejaH kshamaa dhrutiH shoucam adhrohonaatimaanitaa
bhavanti sampadain daivIm abhhijaatasya bhaarata

dambhho darpo abhhimaanashca krodhaH paarushya mevaca
agyaanam caabhhijaatasya paarthha sampadamaasureem

Daivee (Divine qualities:)

Fortitude; sacred energy coming from strength of faith, conviction in Goal, consistency of purpose; vivid perception of the ideal; a bold spirit of sacrifice cultivated diligently

Adro’ha’ha

Non-hatred

26.

Na Athi’mamathaa

Absence of excessive-pride

 

Aasuree (Non-divine qualities)

1.      Dhambhaha                Ostentation; Hypocricy

2.      Dharpaha                    Arrogance

3.      Krodhaha                   Anger, Rage.

4.      Paarushyam                Insolence

5.      Agnyaanam                 Ignorance of self; self-delusion

Getting rid of these five negative qualities will enable us to gain the 26 Divine qualities.

During Navaratri celebrations, we pray to Durga in the first three days to grant us the strength and ability to banish the negativities in us and in the succeeding three days we pray to Lakshmi to grant us the wealth of the twentysix divine qualities (daiveeka sampatthi), enabling us with the Blessings of Sarasvati in the last three days to gain spiritual knowledge.
